Case Study: Pool 3 Demolition

Grain elevators are synonymous with Thunder Bay. For over a century, our city has fed the world transferring rail-bound grain from the West to freighters travelling east through the St. Lawrence Seaway. But have you ever tried to tear a grain elevator down?

Tycon Construction was commissioned to demolish Pool 3 and reclaim the land. It proved to be an extremely difficult project given the number of unknowns. For example, parts of the structure were crumbling while other areas remained sturdy. It quickly became apparent that the traditional approach to demolition wouldn’t be safe enough. There was a real possibility of a dangerous collapse during the demolition work.

Tycon solved the problem by bringing in a specialized crane and boom that could work from the top down without the need for ramps. We strategically removed sections in a precise order while ensuring other areas of the structure could maintain the load. After several days of work, we had successfully brought down the entire structure and remediated the land without a single injury.
